Osaka Castle

It was a long walk towards the castle. We didn't mind because along the way, we were able to take some good photos of the park.

Discover Osaka: Namba District

Day 5

January 1, 2013

Namba District
Osaka, Japan

After breakfast at Shinonomesu ryokan, we packed our bag and traveled back by train to our hotel in Shin-Osaka. Our plan is to spend the rest of the afternoon in Rinku Premium Outlets.

boarding the subway train for the first time

To get to Rinku town, we had to passed by Namba, regarded as the center of the so-called Minami (South) area of Osaka. It is most famous for Glico Man and of course, the Kani Doraku Crab. Both of which are located in Dotonbori canal.

Discover Kinosaki: New Year Breakfast + Train Ride

Day 5

January 1, 2013

Shinonomesou
Kinosaki Onsen
Japan

Breakfast

Hello! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese New Year to all! Anyway, I though of sharing this post today because it happened last January 1, 2013 (New Year) in Kinosaki, Japan.

In my previous post, I related about the loud banging on our door early in the morning. It was one of the chambermaids. Really?! I can't believe she would be knocking at 7 in the morning. We thought we scheduled the breakfast at 8am... darn!

 our impossible to finish breakfast

While one chambermaid was busy rolling away the futon bed, the other one was busy preparing and setting up our breakfast laid out on top of the tatami mat. The tray you see above is just for one person.

For a closer look at what the onsen served to us that day, kindly read after the break...

Discover Kinosaki: Kani Suki (Winter Crab) Meal

December 3, 2013

Shinonomesou
Kani Suki menu (Dinner)

After visiting five onsen or public baths in one afternoon, we went back to Shinonomesou. We were surprised to see what was laid out on the table - our Kani Suki dinner. It does not look that much on our table but believe me, even DH gave up eating the last few pieces. It was way too much for two persons. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed every bit of the giant winter crab. It was a feast to say the least.

what is gluttony?

It was a complete meal with vegetables, rice and of course, the winter crab cooked in so many ways, tempura included! Oh, some crab parts were to be eaten sashimi style ; p

Discover Kinosaki: Onsen, Ryokan and More!

Day 4

December 31, 2012

Kinosaki, Japan

When visiting Japan, a side trip to Kinosaki-Onsen is a must! I anticipated that we will be needing a break from our 8-day vacation so I scheduled our visit on our 4th day.

Kinosaki-Onsen* is the biggest hot spring resort in Hyogo. It is a 3-hour train ride to total bliss. We boarded the 9:04 am Limited Express Kounotori train from Shin-Osaka to Kinosaki-Onsen. We arrived as scheduled (11:51am). Unfortunately, we were not allowed to check-in at Shinonomesou until 2 in the afternoon.

Jizou Yu Onsen is one of the seven sotoyu

Kinosaki-Onsen is a place which has seven sotoyu*, a hot spring water drinking spot and a foot bath facility. If you check-in with one of the ryokan*, a tour of the seven sotoyu is already included with your board and lodging fee.  Mitsui Outlet Park

From Tarumi Station, we walked towards Mitsui Outlet Park. It was a long walk. I was tired and at the same time excited to see what's in store for us ; )

Discover Kobe: Weathercock House (Kazamidori-no-Yakata)

Day 3

December 30, 2012

Weathercock House (Kazamidori-no-Yakata)
3-13-3 Kitano-cho, Chuoh-ku,
Kobe
08-2423223

Operating Hours: 9 am to 6 pm

Close: first Tuesday of February and June

Entrance Fee: JPY 500 450 (PhP 225)*

*Kobe Welcome Coupon - given at the Information Center in Shin-Kobe Station

Aside from Kobe Beef, one of the main tourist attractions of Shin-Kobe is its city district, Kitano-cho. Visiting the area was a part of our itinerary, hmm, the only one that DH and I were able to do. We decided not to do the rest as planned due to the rainy weather ; (

Weathercock House was built in 1909

When we got off the station, we asked the girl at the Information which among the numerous foreign or western style residences known as Ijinkan is worth looking into. She suggested Kazamidori-no-Yakata also known as Weathercock House.

The Former Thomas Residence
Designated a National Important Cultural Asset on January 21, 1978

This residence, known as Kazamidori-no-Yakata (The Weathercock Mansion) was built in 1909 by Mr. Godfried  Thomas, a German trader, as his personal residence.

The house's brick exterior makes it unique amongst the remaining Ijinkan residences in the Kitano-Yamate district. With its vivid brick color and the front porch's stone masonry, the house exudes a stately atmosphere.

The metal rooster does more than indicate the wind direction, it also ward off evil spirits, and promotes Christian doctrine with its advocacy of caution and respect of nature.

The interior design is an attractive fusion of the traditional German style and Art Nouveau of the late 19th to early 20th century.

For the rest of the Ijinkan, she told us that taking photos of the facade is allowed and that's what we did ; p Although there are packages available---> visit 9 houses for JPY 3,500 (PhP1,750), we can't go inside all the houses because it's time-consuming. Plus, I don't want to bore you with too much architecture ; p

Curious what's inside the house? Then read after the break....

Discover Kobe: Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Shin-Kobe

Day 3

December 30, 2012

Kobe (DIY Tour)

Japan Railways (JR)-West Rail Kansai Wide Wide Area Pass is the best way to get around Japan. With our passes, we were able to board Japan's Bullet Train called Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe. Passes are sold for only JPY 7,000 (PhP3,500) per person and is good for four days. You can reserve your pass here.

 Shinkansen and I

Running at speed of up to 300 km/h, the Shinkansen is known for punctuality (departs on time to the second), comfort (silent cars with spacious, always forward facing seats), safety (no fatal accidents in its history) and efficiency - SOURCE

I have listed a lot of Things-To-Do but unfortunately, it was raining that day in Kobe. We were not able to visit Kobe Harborland. We were not able to ride Shin Kobe Ropeway or even take Fantasy Kobe Sea Bus (cruise).

Anyway, let me take you to the Shinkansen Station first, read more about it after the break...

Shin-Osaka Station: Juicer Bar & Gourmet Street (Ajino Kouji)

Day 2

December 29, 2012

Shin-Osaka Station

After touring Kyoto, we boarded the train (JR Kyoto Line for Osaka/Sannomiya) back to Shin-Osaka Station. It's a 30-minute train ride. It was already 8pm when we finally reached our destination and we were hungry. Right after we exit, we discovered that there is an underground street full of restaurants. It is aptly called Gourmet Street.

Gindara Bento Meal JPY 1,360

After scouring through the restaurants one by one, we went back to a restaurant that we found at the back. It does not have an English name so I will just post a photo of the restaurant after the break.

Discover Kyoto: Nishiki Market, Takoyaki & Kyoto Station

Day 2

Night

December 29, 2012

Kyoto (DIY Tour)

I did not know that touring Kyoto in one day is not enough especially if you are doing everything on your own (without a tour package, that is). There are just too many things to see and places to visit. I did not even think that I would end up writing three entries about Kyoto ; p Heck, Nishiki Market alone deserves one whole entry.

When you take a peek into my itinerary, visiting Nara was scheduled on the same day since the distance from Kyoto to Nara is just short. We ended up not visiting Nara altogether, but we are definitely going to visit it when we go back to Japan.

Nishiki Market

Nishiki Market is the "Kitchen of Kyoto" lined with over 100 shops selling different kinds of ingredients. It is teh best place to get a taste of the flavor of Kyoto!

Our last stop in Kyoto is Nishiki Market. We spent an hour oohing and aahing at the amazing food ingredients plus many others that the merchants sell.

To find out more, you can read after the break. It will be loaded with lots of photos, I promise...

Discover Kyoto: Geisha in Gion, Yasakajinja & Tokei-ji Temple

Day 2

Afternoon

December 29, 2012

Kyoto (DIY Tour)

After eating a vegetarian lunch over at Yudofuya Restaurant, we hopped on the bus using our Kyoto City Bus One-day pass to Gion.

Gion is an entertainment district lined with buildings exhibiting a more traditional, Kyoto-esque style of architecture. You can sometimes see a geisha walking through at night.

Izumo no Okuni

In 1603, Izumo no Okuni presented her Kabuki Odori (Kabuki Dance) here on the Shijo Gawara the dry riverbed along side the Kamogawa River near Shijo. At a time when Kyoto was in disarray after the Battle of Sekigahara, Okuni's performances dressed in flamboyant men's costumes delighted and caught the imagination of the people, receiving tremendous acclaim.

Okuni is considered to  be the founder of kabuki, but her birthplace is unknown. She was a miko (shrinemaiden) at Izumo Taisha Shrine in Shimane who brought her troupe of performers to Kyoto to solicit contributions. Here in Kyoto, she first gained fame for her shows in the Noh stage at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, then toured around amid growing popularity.

Later, in the beginning of the Edo period, onna kabuki (kabuki played by women) was banned as a corrupting influence on social morals. Me took over, even playing the female roles (onna-gata), and the resulting shows developed into the kabuki of today.

Kyoto (DIY Tour)

For our Japan trip, I was in charge of the itinerary. A few days before we left, I was cramming as usual. It was a good thing I found a very helpful Japanese website written in English and finished the itinerary in no time.

 Kyoto Tower

Kyoto Tower is included in our itinerary. Sadly, when we decided to enter the observation deck that night, it was closed due to the renovation of its elevators until April 2013.

It is the first thing you see when you get out of Kyoto Station. For visitor's who wish to save on Kyoto Tower's viewing deck admission, you can print out an online coupon here. Instead of paying JPY770 (PhP385), you pay only JPY 700 (PHP 350) with the coupon.

Kyo-Chabana & Our First Night in Osaka

December 28, 2012

Day 1

Kyo-Chabana
2nd floor Shin-Osaka Station
Osaka, Japan
06-6152-8751

Hello peeps! I just got back yesterday from my vacation in Osaka, Japan. I was tired from all the walking we did in and around Osaka but we had fun during our 8-day stay.

 Kyo-Chabana facade

We arrived at around seven in the evening. From the airport, we bought 2 Kansai Wide Area Passes then rode Kansai-airport Express Haruka to Shin-Osaka station. After checking in Remm Shin-Osaka, the only decent restaurant that was still open at 10:30 in the evening (last order) aside from McDonald's was Kyo-Chabana. Little did we know that Kyo-Chabana is famous in Kyoto and Osaka for its okonomiyaki. The restaurant is located one floor down from where we stayed.

Find out what we ordered after the break...

Remm Shin-Osaka Hotel Review

December 28, 2012 to January 4, 2013

Remm Shin-Osaka
1-1-1 Miyahara, Yodogawa-ku,
Osaka

*December 32, 2012 and January 1, 2013

Rate includes service charge and tax

Remm Shin-Osaka is the most convenient hotel that we have ever booked. It's location is right smack in the middle of a bustling train (JR Shin-Osaka) and subway station (Shin-Osaka) in Osaka. Even though this is also the smallest room that DH has booked so far, I can't complain because we are on a tight budget. Yes, our room is even smaller than the hotel rooms we have booked in Hong Kong. I would rather spend money on sight-seeing tours and shopping than spend it on accommodation ; p Of course, that's just me!

bedroom with glass bathroom wall partition

The room is so tiny. There is no space in between the bathroom wall and the bed ; p  The wall is not even a wall per se, it is a glass partition. Anyway, don't fret! You can always pull down the two blinds inside the bathroom for privacy.

Just to give you an idea on how small this room is, I was standing near the door when the photo above was taken. There was really no place else for our luggage. The good thing is, the guest rooms have most of the amenities that a 5 star hotel provide.

To view more photos of Remm Shin-Osaka, read after the break...

Japan Visa Requirement for Philippine Passport Holders

In my previous post, I already shared the good news that my Japan Visa was already approved ; p For those of you who are interested in applying for one, here is a step-by-step procedure on how to acquire a Japan Visa in just 3 days...

Japan Visa for Philippine passport holder

I got a Single Entry Japan Visa which is valid for a 15 days stay within 3 months from November 23 (date of issue) to February 23, 2013.

I look so serious in the photo because I read here that the facial expression in photo must be general expression and not exaggerated one.

Bag Review: Kathy Van Zeeland Postman Travel Shopper

I first encountered the brand, Kathy Van Zeeland, when DH and I visited my cousin who lives in Boston, Ma. I can't remember if I saw it in Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Anyway, I shudder at the thought of buying it. For one, I was not yet into buying expensive handbags. Second, I was not really sure if it's a well known brand.

Kathy Van Zeeland Fifth Avenue, New York

I relayed to my cousin about my shopping dilemma. From her, I learned that it is a pretty well-known brand. Sadly, I was not able to go back because it was already our last day in Boston. Fast forward to 2011, she emailed me that she was able to buy not just one but two bags from the designer brand. She emailed both pics and asked me to choose one. She said that she will include it in her next package that will be shipped to the Philippines.

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Behave Yourself

My collection of pink lipsticks is now growing with the addition of MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Behave Yourself!

MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Behave Yourself NT$600 (PhP900)

I bought it in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, Taipei for only NT$600. I bought two MAC lipsticks that day! The other one is MAC Amplified Cream Lipstick in Morange. Morange is the reason why I went to MAC in the first place. I would discuss about it in another post ; p

After getting Morange, I spotted a tester of MAC Amplified Cream Lipstick in Chatterbox but it was already sold out... whoa! It will be on my wish list and I plan to get it one day ; p  I was floored when this color was shown to me by the MUA/SA. I really like the glossy finish plus I don't even need to apply lip balm prior to lipstick application.
